The active ingredient in capsicum plasters is capsaicin, found naturally in hot peppers. Capsaicin has analgesic properties that provide temporary pain relief.

When capsaicin touches nerve receptors, it depletes neurotransmitters called substance P from nerve fibers. This temporarily blocks transmission of pain signals to the brain.

Additionally, capsaicin triggers a warm, tingling sensation as it interacts with nerve receptors. This counterirritation distracts the brain from deeper muscular and joint aches.

As nerves react to topical capsaicin, increased blood circulation also occurs at the skin's surface. This boosts blood flow to affected joints, muscles and connective tissue, aiding healing.

Inside medicated plasters, capsaicin slowly penetrates through the skin over 8-12 hours. The prolonged exposure to nerves under the skin disrupts pain signaling, providing targeted temporary relief.

While not a cure, capsaicin’s mechanisms of action provide a natural way to potentially ease localized chronic pain when delivered properly through capsicum plasters.
